1. Students will be presented with the entry document (scenario). In a whole class discussion, a chart will be constructed with contributions from the students to include "what we know about the problem" and "what we still need to know." This will extend into students creating 1-2 driving questions for the problem.
2. Students will be introduced to their cooperative learning groups. Social contracts will be signed and roles of each member defined (team leader, recorder, reporter, encourager).
3. Students will explore the features of print newspapers to identify the newspaper name, headlines, sections, publication dates, etc.
4. Students will explore the features of online newspapers by accessing www.dallasmorningnews.com. They will work in their cooperative groups using a venn diagram to compare/contrast online newspapers and print newspapers.
5. Minilessons will be presented on sentence construction, punctuation, and capitalization. Teacher modeling and guided practice will be offered through the textbook and interactive grammar sites.
6. Guest speakers from the newspaper industry will speak to the students about their work.
7. Students will use the cut/fold templates from common links folder to create their newspaper articles (www.readwrite.think.org)
